GAUTENG – The Gauteng Anti-Gang Unit has arrested a 17-year-old girl for discharging a firearm at a municipality area over the weekend. The girl was taken to Walter Sisulu Juvenile centre and police are still looking for the firearm. The girl was arrested following a video which went viral on social media where she was seen firing shots at a cemetery. She was traced and was arrested at home. Police are looking for other people related to the same incident. Meanwhile, a total of 63 firearms and more than 1400 ammunition have been recovered in Gauteng this week (15 – 21 July). These firearms were recovered in the five districts during various operations and stop and searches. One of the latest incidents where firearms were recovered includes that where members of AGU arrested two suspects in Westbury and recovered firearms. The two suspects were arrested on Friday and Saturday and they are both in police custody. In another incident in Rossetenville, police arrested five suspect and recovered two firearms and a stolen vehicle following an attempted hijacking in Rossetenville yesterday. One Suspect was shot and killed while another was wounded. Police members from various units including TRT, K9, Counter intelligence, security personnel including Fidelity, DPC tracking team, Tracker, CAP specialised operations and Gauteng traffic airwing were following up information about a group of suspects who were committing armed robberies in the area. Police met up with the suspects as they were busy be with their patrols. A high be speed Chase ensued and the police cornered the suspects in Oakdene. Suspects fired shots at the police and the police retaliated. Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni thanked all the concerted efforts of our members and crime fighting partners and further mentioned that community members can rest assured that SAPS in Gauteng will continue to strive towards creating a safe and secure environment for all its citizens. All the recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic test to determine whether they can be linked to other serious crimes committed.
