Gauteng Hawks head suspended amid corruption and disrepute charges as political pressure mounts
A senior figure at the heart of South Africa’s elite police investigative unit has been suspended, deepening an already sensitive case that has drawn political scrutiny and raised fresh questions about institutional integrity within the Hawks.
Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, head of the Gauteng division of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, widely known as the Hawks, has been suspended with immediate effect following criminal charges linked to his arrest earlier this year.
His suspension, confirmed last week, includes a charge reportedly related to bringing the unit into disrepute, marking a significant fall from grace for a 40-year veteran of the South African Police Service.
Arrest tied to alleged Precious Metals Act violations
Kadwa was arrested in May alongside two other high-profile figures, including Crime Intelligence officer Major General Feroz Khan and businessman Tariq Downes.
The trio face charges under the Precious Metals Act, as well as counts of defeating the ends of justice. The allegations relate to incidents dating back to 2021.
All three were released on R20,000 bail each and are expected to return to court on 14 July, where the matter will continue to unfold under intense public and institutional scrutiny.
Their arrest was carried out by the Political Killings Task Team, a specialised investigative unit tasked with probing politically sensitive and violent crimes.
Political fallout and calls for accountability
The case has already triggered strong political reaction.
Both the Democratic Alliance and the uMkhonto weSizwe Party have publicly called for accountability, warning that the allegations risk undermining confidence in law enforcement structures at a time when public trust is already fragile.
Their statements reflect growing concern over whether internal discipline and oversight mechanisms within elite policing units are strong enough to withstand allegations involving senior leadership.
Legal setbacks add to pressure
In a separate development that further complicates Kadwa’s legal position, his application to recover a seized cellphone reportedly containing state-related sensitive material was struck off the court roll in early June.
The device forms part of the broader investigation, and its contents are believed to be central to some of the allegations being examined.
A career overshadowed by allegations
Kadwa’s suspension marks a dramatic turn for a senior officer with four decades of service in the South African Police Service. Once regarded as a seasoned figure within the country’s policing hierarchy, he now finds himself at the centre of a case that blends criminal allegations, political tension and institutional reputational risk.
As the matter returns to court in July, attention will remain fixed on how deeply the allegations extend, and what they may reveal about the internal workings of one of South Africa’s most powerful investigative units.
