Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is deeply saddened by the brutal murder of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, a Grade 8 learner at Ikusasalethu Secondary School. Likhona’s body was found mutilated in Roodepoort on Sunday, 1 June 2025, during National Child Protection Week, a time when children’s rights are affirmed under our Constitution.
While police continue their investigation, the GDE has immediately deployed its Psycho-Social Support Unit at Ikusasalethu Secondary to provide counselling and trauma support to learners and teachers affected by this tragedy. We stand united in condemning all acts of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, especially when they target young people.
“As the Department, we are heartbroken by the loss of a promising young life. For Likhona to be taken so brutally is unacceptable. We call on law enforcement to swiftly apprehend those responsible and extend our deepest condolences to her family and the Ikusasalethu community, we share in your grief,” said MEC Chiloane.
