Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Garden Route District police deployed to combat crime as part of Safer Festive Season operations clamped down on unlicensed liquor outlets and confiscated 763 litres of liquor during high-density operations. On Tuesday, 24 December 2024 George Crime Prevention Unit members, armed with a search warrant, operationalised information when they pounced on a premises at Wilderness Heights. The members seized 162 litres of liquor and arrested a 58-year-old man on a charge of selling liquor without a licence. Later the same day 24 December 2024, Knysna police members embarked on similar operations in Smutsville, Sedgefield where 105 litres of liquor of various brands were seized. A 43-year-old man was subsequently arrested. He is facing a charge of selling liquor without a licence. Meanwhile, yesterday 25 December 2024, the Deputy National Commissioner responsible for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya led various police units and other law enforcement agencies with festive season operations in the Garden Route District. The high-density operations yielded excellent results with the arrests of 150 suspects for various offences. A total of 19 suspects were arrested for drug related offences, seven for drunken driving, seven for possession of dangerous weapons, three undocumented persons and others for minor offences. Small quantities of drugs, several sharp objects and ammunition were confiscated. The forces also seized 181 litres of liquor at an unlicensed premises at Mandela Village in Thembalethu, George and 315 litres at Kwanonqaba yesterday 25 December 2024. Two suspects aged 30 and 42 were arrested on a charge of selling liquor without a licence each. All those arrested, will appear in the respective courts once charged. Substance abuse remains one of the main contributors towards serious and violent crimes during this period. A zero tolerance approach will be maintained with the deployment of additional resources during the festive period in an effort to safeguard visitors and local communities. Ends
