Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, welcomes the harsh sentence handed down to 20-year-old Jamaine Long, convicted of a series of violent crimes including two counts of murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. During the early hours of Sunday, 13 February 2022, members of the Galeshewe SAPS responded to a murder scene at a tavern in Sobantu Township, Galeshewe. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a patron had been fatally stabbed. Further investigations revealed that two additional individuals had sustained serious stab wounds, with the suspect positively identified as Jamaine Long. At the time of the incident, Long was a minor. He was subsequently arrested, charged, and released into the custody of his parents. In March 2023, Galeshewe SAPS responded to another stabbing incident in Santa Zone 2, involving the same suspect. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Long faced multiple charges related to violent crimes committed in Galeshewe, which were consolidated into a single trial held at the Kimberley High Court. He was found guilty on eight counts and sentenced to a total of 40 years’ imprisonment for the two murders, and an additional 10 years’ for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He has also been declared unfit to possess a firearm. Lieutenant General Otola commended the efforts of the Galeshewe SAPS Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation Unit for their thorough investigation, which led to a successful conviction and sentencing.
