Media Statement SELOSESHA – A sombre atmosphere enveloped Tawana Primary School as family, friends and colleagues gathered to bid farewell to Captain Lemogang Gilbert Masilo and his daughter, Gaone Ookame Masilo. The funeral service, attended by senior officials of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and members of the community, was a poignant reminder of the tragic loss. The Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, accompanied by her deputies, provincial heads, and other senior managers, led a delegation of SAPS officers in paying their last respects. SAPS chaplains from various districts also attended the ceremony, offering prayers and spiritual support to the grieving family. The service was conducted in three segments. The first was led by the family, followed by tributes from SAPS, and concluded with the burial at the cemetery. Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, Provincial Head of Corporate Communication, officiated the SAPS segment of the funeral. He introduced Major General Len Singh, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Support Services, who provided an overview of Captain Masilo’s service in SAPS. Tributes to a Dedicated Officer Maj Gen Singh recounted Captain Masilo’s journey in SAPS, beginning in 2009 at the Head Office Litigation Office. In 2016, he joined the Provincial Band, where his passion for music and dedication to duty became well-known. Captain Masilo played the trumpet at significant events, including the launch of the Festive Season Operation and the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Children Abuse campaign. “He was a brother, father, son, colleague, and husband. His humility and integrity made him a pillar of our organization,” said General Singh. “Let us honour his memory by continuing to serve our communities with respect and dedication.” Captain Masilo was also recognized for his contributions during COVID-19 memorials, where he played the Last Post, a role he performed with deep reverence. Eulogy by Lt Gen Motswenyane Lieutenant General Motswenyane delivered a heartfelt eulogy, sharing her personal memories of Captain Masilo. “I first learned his surname only after his passing,” she admitted. “To us, he was simply Lemogang, a diligent, respectful and energetic officer who carried out his duties with pride.” The Commissioner expressed disbelief at the tragic news, reflecting on the Captain’s enduring presence within the SAPS band. “Even during the most challenging times, such as COVID-19, his trumpet brought solace to many. His absence leaves a void, but we trust God will raise another to carry on his legacy.” She extended her condolences to the family, citing Isaiah 40:31 to encourage them to find strength in their faith during this difficult time. A Tragic Loss The tragic accident that claimed the lives of Captain Masilo and his daughter has left a profound sense of loss within the SAPS community and beyond. Reverend Leripa offered prayers, asking for comfort and strength for the bereaved family. Final Farewell The funeral procession proceeded to the cemetery, where the SAPS marching band performed a final tribute. As the two were laid to rest, the sound of trumpets and the salutes of colleagues marked the conclusion of a life well-lived in service to others. May the souls of Captain Masilo and his daughter Gaone rest in eternal peace. Their memory will forever remain in the hearts of their loved ones. Ends
