EASTERN CAPE = Gary David Murray (56) was convicted and sentenced by the East London Regional Court on 3 September 2024 for fraud. Murray was arrested by the East London Serious Commercial Crime Investigation of the Hawks on 19 August 2020 where he appeared before the East London Magistrate’s court on the same day of his arrest and was released on warning. On 28 December 2007, the accused falsely submitted invoices and tax returns to South African Revenue Services (SARS) in order to get tax refund. Subsequently, he successfully received tax refund from SARS. During auditing SARS picked up discrepancies on the payment made to the accused and the matter was referred to the Hawks for thorough probe. Thorough investigations by the Hawks revealed that SARS was actually prejudiced cash to an amount of over R600 000 hence he was arrested. Murray made numerous court appearances until his conviction and sentencing by the East London Regional Court on 3 September 2024. He was sentenced to pay a fine of R250 000 of which he was ordered to pay R20 000 immediately. In addition, Murray was further ordered to pay R10 000 in monthly installments before the 20 of each month for a period of two years or to undergo to five years imprisonment of which wholly suspended for five years.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwenya expressed his gratitude to the investigating team for the job well done. He further welcomed the sentencing of the accused.
