Media Statement POTCHEFSTROOM – In an endeavour to fight gangsterism, four alleged members of the “Mathintha” gang, between the ages of 17 and 25, were detained following an alleged incident reported on Sunday, 14 April 2024. It is alleged that a gang, consisting of eight suspects, stormed a tuck-shop in Chris Hani Section, Tswelelang Location in Wolmaransstad. The suspects, allegedly armed with pangas, knives and iron pipes, robbed the shop of an undisclosed amount of cash and stock to the estimated value of R6000.00. Shortly after the incident was reported to the police, the first two suspects, namely; Tebogo Kenalemang (18) and Kgotso Emmanuel “Pakistan” Thabe (19) were arrested by Wolmaransstad police. They appeared before the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 17 April 2024, and were remanded in custody ever since their apprehension. Further investigation by the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit, led to two more arrests on Friday, 3 May 2024. The two suspects, aged 25 and 17, will appear before the Wolmaransstad Magistrates’ and Children’s Court respectively on Monday, 6 May 2024, on charges of business robbery. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, congratulated the Wolmaransstad police for their speedy reaction and the Anti-Gang Unit members for their meticulous investigation that resulted in these arrests, which he said will impact positively on crimes committed by gangs in the area.
