Media Statement WELKOM – Members of the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit received information from Crime Intelligence about a suspicious vehicle, a Nissan bakkie double Cab with no registration numbers, traveling from Odendaalsrus towards Welkom with four occupants. On 19 May 2024 at about 01:30 the information was operationalised and the vehicle was identified and intercepted near Phakisa Raceway, whereby a thorough search was conducted. A Norinco pistol with one magazine and eight live rounds of ammunition were found and seized. No license was produced to be in possession thereof. The bakkie, a knife and eight cellphones were also seized. The suspects, aged between 32 and 48, were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. A preliminary investigation reveals that the firearm was reported stolen in Kliprivier in December 2021. The suspects will appear on 21 May 2024 in Welkom Magistrate’s Court. Ends
