Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – OR Tambo Police recovered four unlicensed/prohibited firearms on Thursday, 16 January 2025, in Port St Johns and Mthatha arresting two male suspects aged 32 and 62. In Port St Johns, police followed information about a 62-year-old man alleged to be having unlicensed firearms at Mthalala locality, Caguba A/A at about 16H00 and on their arrival at the identified homestead, they recovered a Shotgun with an erased serial number, two homemade firearms and eleven live shells (ammunition) in the bedroom of the suspect. The 62-year-old suspect was arrested and will appear before Port St Johns magistrate court on Monday, 20, January 2025 on charges of unlawful possession of unlicensed/prohibited firearms and ammunition. In a separate incident in Mthatha on Thursday, 16 January 2025 at about 15:30, a 32-year-old male suspect of Zimbane A/A was arrested by the Tactical team after a tip off and an unlicensed 9mm pistol with an erased serial number having ammunition was recovered. He briefly appeared before Mthatha Magistrate Court on Friday, 17 January 2025, and his case was postponed to Thursday, 23 January 2025, for a formal bail application.
The Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, Brigadier Ntuli commended the police for their sterling work claiming that many innocent lives have been saved hence these illegal firearms are used in the commission of serious violent crimes that lead to deaths.
