Media Statement MPUMALANGA – Samuel Bassie Mahlangu (60), a former Warrant Officer, and a pensioner, appeared before the Delmas Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 18 June 2024 for defeating the ends of justice and tampering with evidence. His appearance followed after Mahlangu was served with J175, on 14 May 2024 by the Middelburg based Serious Corruption Investigation after the docket was referred to them for further investigation. It is alleged that on 1 August 2023, members of DPCI (Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation) and NCI (National Crime Intelligence), conducted a disruptive operation on illegal mining whereby an exhibits (gold bearing materials) were seized and booked in SAPS 13 (exhibits register) at Delmas SAPS and the accused signed for them. On 2 August 2023, a member of NCI went to the Police Station for the exhibit, and the accused indicated that he was not aware that the items were exhibits. He further showed them where he dumped the exhibit in a bin used for garbage at the back of the Police Station without disposal order entry made. Investigation was conducted, and J175 was served to Mahlangu to appear in court on Tuesday, 18 June 2024. The case was postponed to 27 June 2024 for further investigation. Ends
