Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – The swift arrest of a former police reservist on charges of fraud was welcomed by the community in Middleburg. It is alleged that the 50-year-old suspect defrauded the community earlier in 2024, posing as a SAPS detective, thereafter he requested money to assist suspects in obtaining successful bail applications. On separate incidents, he would also pretend to be a traffic officer, promising to squash fines. The suspect used different names in defrauding people, and several incidents were reported to police. He claimed an estimated amount of more than R20 000-00 for his services from the victims and preferred the money to be deposited into money market. A total of five cases of fraud are under investigation against him. He appeared in the Middleburg Magistrate Court on Monday, 13 May 2024 and he is remanded in custody to Monday, 2o May 2024 for a formal bail application. Ends
