FNB Art Joburg Returns for 19th Edition in 2026 as Johannesburg Celebrates 140 Years
Johannesburg is preparing to once again become the centre of Africa’s contemporary art conversation as FNB Art Joburg announces its return for its 19th edition, bringing together leading artists, galleries, collectors and cultural voices from across the continent.
The prestigious art fair will take place from Friday, 4 September to Sunday, 6 September 2026 at the Sandton Convention Centre, coinciding with Johannesburg’s 140th birthday, marking a significant moment for a city long recognised as one of Africa’s most influential cultural hubs.
Over nearly two decades, FNB Art Joburg has grown into one of the continent’s most important platforms for contemporary African art, creating a space where creativity, commerce and cultural dialogue meet.
The fair has become a major destination for artists, collectors and institutions seeking to engage with the ideas, identities and stories shaping Africa’s place in the global art landscape.
A celebration of African creativity and Johannesburg’s cultural legacy

A growing platform for established and emerging artists
FNB Art Joburg’s structure has been designed to reflect the diversity and complexity of contemporary African artistic expression.
The fair’s established platforms, including gallery HUB, gallery LAB, ORG, AUX, INK, GIF and MAX, provide audiences with different ways to experience art, from major gallery exhibitions to experimental projects and cultural discussions.
This year, the fair will introduce a new section, ARC, expanding opportunities for audiences to discover ambitious artistic practices.
ARC will showcase leading African galleries representing internationally recognised artists whose work continues to influence global conversations around contemporary art.
Meanwhile, gallery LAB will continue supporting emerging and hybrid spaces that experiment with new approaches to exhibition-making and representation.

Open City brings art beyond the convention centre
Alongside the main fair, Open City will return from 20 August to 14 September 2026 in partnership with Brand South Africa.
The initiative will transform Johannesburg into an extended cultural exhibition, connecting art with music, fashion, design, food and live performances across the city.
By taking creativity beyond the walls of the Sandton Convention Centre, Open City highlights Johannesburg itself as part of the artistic experience.
The programme aims to support cultural workers throughout the city while showcasing the diversity and creativity that continue to define Johannesburg’s identity.
