WESTERN CAPE – Members attached to Maitland Flying Squad were standing off at Manenberg SAPS late yesterday afternoon when they heard gunshots in the vicinity of Klipfontein and Duinefontein Roads, Manenberg. They drove in the direction of the sound of the gunshots to the intersection where they saw a taxi driving away. The members also noticed two people crossing the intersection towards the taxi. The two people were stopped and searched, and two legal firearms with 42 9mm rounds of ammunition were found in their possession, respectively. The two suspects were identified by a community member as the persons who shot a pedestrian in the upper leg. The two suspects, aged 30 and 40, were arrested and detained at Manenberg SAPS for attempted murder and discharging a firearm in a municipal area. The suspects are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrates court once they are charged. In an unrelated incident earlier today (Wednesday, 02 October 2024), at around 06:50, Elsies River detectives were doing tracing operations when they heard gunshots coming from the side of Old Stellenbosch Road. The members quickly drove in the direction where the shots were coming from, and upon arrival, they saw a male standing against the wall looking very suspicious. The man ran away upon noticing the police approaching him. The police members gave chase and managed to apprehend him with a firearm and ammunition in his possession. The 29-year-old man was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. He is scheduled to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court on the mentioned charges. Ends
