Charmza the DJ claims he created Jerusalema, takes Master KG to court in copyright battle
Music producer Charmza the DJ, born Ntimela Chris Chauke, has launched a legal battle against global hitmaker Master KG, claiming he is the original creator of the hit song Jerusalema.
In court papers filed at the Pretoria High Court, Charmza alleges he composed the song’s beat, melody, and arrangement at Master KG’s Midrand studio on August 19, 2019, while working with vocalist Nomcebo Zikode.
He insists Master KG was not present during the session and that no formal agreements or rights clearances were put in place, leaving him and Nomcebo as the rightful copyright holders.
Charmza, alongside fellow artist Biblos, filed the lawsuit in June 2022. The case targets Master KG, label Open Mic Productions, music distributor Africori, and Biblos himself, seeking recognition and financial compensation. The trial has been scheduled for November 17–25, 2025, with Charmza expected to call three witnesses.
Master KG and Open Mic Productions have dismissed the accusations as “baseless, defamatory, and vexatious,” asserting that the claims remain unproven in court.
Representing Charmza is attorney Stephen Hollis of Adams & Adams, who is handling the case pro bono. Hollis says the matter highlights deeper systemic issues in South Africa’s music industry, particularly the exploitation of artists.
Charmza estimates the case could be worth over R100 million. He has reportedly gone into hiding, fearing for his life after his father and sibling were fatally shot an attack he believes may be linked to the ongoing dispute.
The legal standoff remains unresolved, with both parties preparing their cases ahead of the November 2025 court showdown.
