Media Statement BLOEMFONTEIN – Police in the Free State concluded an investigation into corruption involving the fraudulent issuing of driver’s licenses. The investigation, which was launched in 2023 targeted a syndicate operating within the licensing sector in the Free State and Northern Cape. Two civilian suspects aged 52 and 62 were arrested in Petrusburg and three employees of the Traffic Department, aged between 30 and 50, were arrested in Kimberley. Through diligent and thorough investigative efforts, several key suspects have been identified and taken into custody. These individuals are believed to have been involved in orchestrating a scheme that enabled unqualified individuals to illegally obtain driver’s licenses. The takedown operation, conducted by the Free State Organised Crime Unit with information from Crime Intelligence, successfully resulted in the apprehension of 5 suspects who were allegedly actively engaged in this criminal activity. The suspects are currently facing charges related to corruption, fraud, and other associated offenses. “The Free State police remains committed to upholding the integrity of the licensing system and will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who undermine it are brought to justice. We would like to thank the community for their support during this investigation and encourage anyone with further information to come forward,” said the Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane.
