Media Statement GAUTENG – Police in Gauteng arrested five suspected illegal miners and recovered two unlicensed firearms after they allegedly shot at the police on Tuesday, 07 January 2025, in Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni District. Police were conducting their routine patrols when they received a complaint of illegal miners who were robbing the community of Lindelani Informal Settlement. The police proceeded to the area, and the community members pointed out the suspects who were at the rime busy with illegal mining activities. As the police were approaching, the suspects started to shoot at the police and the shootout ensued. The police managed to arrest five of the suspects and recovered two unlicensed firearms and more than ten rounds of ammunition. The suspects are expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court in due course, facing charges that include attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and ammunition. Ends
