Five individuals, including a 58-year-old woman, have been arrested in Athlone, Cape Town, after police uncovered a large stash of illegal drugs estimated to be worth R700,000.
The arrests followed a tip-off about suspected drug activity at a fast-food outlet in Belgravia. When officers arrived, they found three vehicles parked outside and observed one person transferring a black bag from one car to another. Police moved in and searched the vehicles, discovering 3,000 mandrax tablets in one and a significant amount of cash, believed to be proceeds from drug sales, in another.
Further investigations led the police to a property in Crawford, where they found an additional 13,000 mandrax tablets and a quantity of schedule 1 medicine.
All confiscated items, including the drugs, cash, and vehicles, have been submitted as evidence. Mobile phones were also seized and will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation. The suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.
