FREE STATE – A 27-year-old man was walking in Thabong, Welkom, on 15 February 2025 at approximately 17:00 when he noticed a maroon vehicle following him. Suddenly, an unknown man wearing a balaclava began chasing him. The suspect caught the victim, and his accomplices assisted in forcing him into the car’s boot. The suspects then drove away with the victim and allegedly assaulted him. He was accused of stealing the suspect’s son’s cellphone. The victim’s mother reported the matter to the police, and a preliminary investigation led officers to a second-hand shop in town, where the suspects were allegedly attempting to retrieve the stolen phone from a dealer. Police rescued the victim, who was found in town. Two women, aged between 38 and 50, along with three men, aged between 30 and 40, were arrested for kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). Additionally, a case of cellphone robbery was opened against the victim, who was also arrested for robbery. The police urge community members to refrain from taking the law into their own hands and to report criminal matters to the authorities, allowing the legal process to take its course.
