Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – On Saturday 09 November 2024, at about 17:45, members of Harare Crime Prevention Unit were doing stop and search operations at Harare 33 Block, when they heard gun shots and traced it to a church at no 33820. Upon arrival at the above mentioned address a preliminary investigation was done and it was confirmed by the cartridges found on the ground inside the church premises as the location where the shots were fired. All congregants were instructed to remain on the premises as a physical search had to be conducted. SAPS members heard the engine of a vehicle started and they approached it. One of the passengers urgently requested to use the bathroom, he was searched and found to be in possession of a firearm of which the serial number was removed and one x 9mm round of ammunition. Another person was approached and searched and in his sling bag, a firearm was found, of which the serial number was removed, with an empty cartridge. Both suspects were arrested for discharging of firearms in a municipal area, the possession of prohibit firearms and the illegal possession of ammunition. Tests were done on both the accused and both firearms, where after the firearms were booked in as exhibits at Harare SAPS. The suspects are expected to appear at the Khayelitsha Magistrate Court on Monday, 11 November 2024, on the mentioned charges. In an unrelated matter, on 09 November 2024 at about 15:58, Clanwilliam SAPS members were contacted by the neighbourhood watch informing them of a person found to be in possession of ammunition. Members immediately went to the address in Khayelitsha, Clanwilliam and found the neighbourhood watch members with the suspect. He was interrogated and could not give account for the ammunition in his possession. The 48-year-old male was arrested for the illegal possession of ammunition and is due to appear in the Clanwilliam Magistrates court on Monday, 11 November 2024, for the illegal possession of ammunition.
