Media Statement FREE STATE – The South African Police Service is pleased to announce a significant development in our ongoing efforts to bring justice to victims of violent crimes. We have successfully facilitated the extradition of Lehlonoholo Maketoane (40), a suspect in the case where the Heilbron Magistrate was murdered Maketoane fled the country to the neighbouring Lesotho after the murder of his wife Mamello Thamae (40) that occurred on 22 September 2023. After an intensive investigation and collaboration with the Lesotho Mounted Police Service and The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol), Maketoane was apprehended in Lesotho on 22 September 2023. He appeared in the Mokhotlong Magistrate’s Court in Lesotho on 26 September 2023 on a charge of murder. The SAPS and LMPS were in contact and the body of 40-year-old victim was repatriated to South Africa for the post-mortem and burial. The extradition processes were launched in accordance with all applicable legal protocols and with the cooperation of Lesotho authorities.
The arrival of Maketoane back in South Africa marks a crucial step forward in our pursuit of justice. He is expected to appear in the Heilbron Magistrate’s Court on Friday 23 August 2024 on charges of murder and kidnapping.
