POTCHEFSTROOM – The fight against extortion and related crimes gained victory when the Provincial Organised Crime Unit arrested two suspects for extortion on Thursday, 27 February 2025, in Delareyville near Lichtenburg. It is alleged that a communique was received from the national Crime Stop requesting an investigation into alleged extortion and intimidation. According to information, the suspects intimidated and demanded money from SANRAL road maintenance contractor. SANRAL reportedly was awarded a tender for emergency intervention and maintenance on the N14 and R505 roads in April 2023. A month later, the suspects started to disrupt the work seemingly due to dissatisfaction about awarding of the tender. Following investigation into the matter, the pair was on Thursday, 27 February 2025, arrested during a joint operation by Anti-Gang Unit, Organised Crime Unit and Public Order Policing (POP). The accused; David Legare (45) and David Kodisang (34), appeared in the Delareyville Magistrates’ Court. Legare was granted R1000.00 bail whereas Kodisang was remanded in custody until Monday, 03 March 2025, for a bail application. They will both reappear on Tuesday, 11 March 2025. The Acting Provincial Police Commissioner, Major General Asaneng commended the team for the arrest and indicated that extortion will not be tolerated and that those who dare the authority of the state, will be dealt with accordingly.
