Media Statement GAUTENG – An extortion attempt by siblings, Thapelo Bokaba (32), and Ofentse Bokaba (39), has landed them in hot water along with Jonas Antonio the alleged boyfriend of another sibling Lebogang Bokaba. The trio colluded and reported Lebogang Bokaba as a missing person earlier July 2024. When Antonio was interviewed by a detective attached to Garankuwa police station, his story did not add up. It was further established that he was in fact an illegal foreign National. He was charged in terms of the Immigration Act and detained. The Bokaba siblings soon came to his aid and offered to pay the detective R10 000 to derail the case. The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Crime Investigators were alerted and both accused were arrested on Monday, 29 July 2024, after they paid the money. Investigation uncovered that the missing person report was actually false. The trio colluded and staged a kidnapping incident in order to extort R24000 from the family members alleged safe release of their ‘kidnapped’ sibling.
The case was partially heard in the Pretoria Magistarte’s Court on Wednesday, 31 July 2024. It has been postponed until Tuesday, 06 August 2024 for a bail application. Meanwhile, their sibling Lebogang Bokaba is yet to return home.
