POTCHEFSTROOM -– A Police Officer working at Ramatlabama Port of Entry (POE) displayed discipline and ethical behaviour by refusing to accept a bribe. On Sunday, 27 October 2024, a man approached a police officer working at the Ramatlabama POE and convinced him to assist in smuggling a stolen vehicle across the border. The member informed his Commander and a controlled operation was planned with the assistance of the Mahikeng Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU). On Tuesday, 29 October 2024, at about 10:00, the man arrived at the border with a Toyota Fortuner and the member approached the driver to check all the necessary documents. The driver of the Fortuner then took out money, amounting to R15 000-00 and gave it to the police officer. After receiving the money, the member arrested 48-year-old Preston Fitzroy Chikafa, a Malawian Citizen, for bribery and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle, valued at R980 000.00 Chikafa appeared before the Molopo Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 30 October 2024, and the matter was postponed to Wednesday, 6 November 2024. The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the members involved for their ethical conduct and commitment to ensure that criminals are brought to book to face the full might of the Law.
