Media Statement Mangaung Metro Social Crime Prevention and Corporate Communication and Liaison carried out a marketing public relations activity at Ntemoseng Secondary School in Botshabelo Police Station precinct. Marketing public relations activity is an integrated and interactive way of planning, executing and evaluating communication in order to enhance credibility, trust and long-term relationships with the organisation’s stakeholders and customers. The Police Ministry initiated The Junior Commissioner Project to build resistance and resilience among young people toward crime and violence affecting them in their different communities. The Vision of the Project is “Creating a safe and secure learning environment that is free from violence, crime and drugs for the development of leaders who will uphold the moral values and principles of our society.” The following is the message that was delivered by Mangaung Metro Junior Commissioner for Visible Policing to fellow learners; “My name is Thato Pearl Mphulanyane from Ntemoseng Secondary School and I’m also part of The Junior Commissioner Project in Mangaung Metro. The topic I chose for today is Gansterism because gangsterism is the most common occurance in South Africa. Gangsters are individuals that act as an organized group in association with criminal activities. Rationales of attribution to gangsterism are peer pressure; feeling pressured by things your friends do, feeling pressured by things people around you do. Another rationale is poverty, family circumstances often push people to venture into criminal activities in order to provide for themselves and their families. The third one is imitation, living in a community or within a family where criminal activities are being performed affects one’s mind, making them believe that is the right thing to do. Creating programmes that are educational for youngsters is a must, creating projects to keep children off unsafe streets is a must and encouraging and supporting children’s mutual activities is also important. Gangsterism in the Free State has been seen to start at an early age, most especially in our schools. So how do we as appointed junior station commanders contribute to the community and the environment’s safety? Well I as a Junior Commissioner for Visible Policing strive to provide officers with the most informative knowledge of learners within my school premises, I endeavour to show the different perspectives of learners experiencing these problems. I promise to lead with utmost professionalism and integrity, not for me but for the benefit of present generations and future generations to come. Ends
