England raised Conway opens door to Bafana Bafana call-up
Bolton Wanderers defender Max Conway has revealed he is open to representing South Africa as he continues his rapid rise through the English football pyramid.
The left-back, who was born in England, qualifies to play for Bafana Bafana through his South African grandmother and says representing the country is something he would love to achieve in the future.
“It’s everything a kid dreams of, playing for their country,” Conway told TalkSPORT recently.
“I’m a quarter South African, so there is that option as well. Hopefully I will in the future.”
Conway admitted he still needs to sort out his South African passport and citizenship, but has made it clear that he is interested in pursuing the opportunity.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable rise, going from non-league football with Buxton to AFC Fylde and then making the step up to the Championship with Bolton.
Now an established first-team player, Conway could potentially become another option for Bafana should he complete the necessary citizenship process.
“I need to sort out passports and citizenship and at some point down the line I could get that sorted. We’ll have to see,” he added.
