Elon Musk resigns from Trump administration
Elon Musk has stepped down as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in the Trump administration after just 130 days in office.
Musk, who was tasked with streamlining the federal government, led a controversial campaign to slash spending and reduce the size of the civilian workforce.
During his brief tenure, Musk oversaw a 12% cut in the federal civilian workforce and initially targeted $2 trillion in savings. However, legal challenges and bipartisan political resistance forced a significant scale-back, with projected savings reduced to $150 billion.
His resignation comes amid mounting criticism of a recently proposed Republican budget bill, which Musk reportedly opposed. The departure also coincides with a sharp 71% decline in profits at Tesla, the electric vehicle company he leads.
The White House has not yet announced a replacement.
