Media Statement DUNDEE – The Office of the District Commissioner Umzinyathi wishes to congratulate Detective Sergeant Michael Zwane of the Dundee Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for successfully gathering every piece of evidence which was presented in court that resulted in the successful eight years’ imprisonment sentencing handed down by the Dundee Regional Court. The accused Sizwe Maphisa, 35-year-old stood accused of sexual assault and kidnapping which occurred at KwaSithole area (Straford Farm) under Dundee policing precinct in May 2022. In May 2022 a case of sexual assault and kidnapping was opened after a 27-year-old was attacked by the accused at her homestead in the early hours of the morning. According to the victim she was sleeping in her homestead, when she heard footsteps outside, a moment later the door was forced opened by the accused. He forcefully dragged the victim to the river and undressed her. Whilst busy, a motor vehicle was passing by the scene, giving the victim an opportunity to escape from the accused. While fighting for her life she managed to remove the accused’s balaclava and was able to get a good look at him. The accused was swiftly arrested by detectives. The detective ensured that the docket was trial ready. During court proceedings the accused was found guilty and sentenced to eight years imprisonment on 18 June 2024. The District Commissioner Major General Francis Slambert wants to assure the community that we as police do not tolerate any acts of Gender-Based Violence in our communities. Ends
