Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Police officers have gone the proverbial extra mile and in the process detained eight suspects for firearm and drug related charges. Police members deployed in the Cape Winelands District to infiltrate the strong hold of possible extortionists proved successful when they conducted a successful integrated intelligence driven operation in Mbekweni on Monday 17 March 2025. The members entered a home in Thandisiswe Street upon which a search ensued. The members remained committed and ultimately confiscated a small consignment of dagga, three imitation firearms and cash. They detained seven suspects between the ages of 37 and 45 for the possession of dagga and the possession of imitation firearms. Meanwhile, police members attached to the Provincial Anti-Economic Crime Task Team conducted an intelligence driven operation in Mitchells Plain policing precinct in the early hours of Tuesday 18 March 2025. Following a detailed briefing session, the members focussed their attention to an identified premises situated within a gang stronghold. At about 03:00 they descended on a house in Merriman Street and searched the entire premises as well as the occupants. Their persistence paid off when they recovered drugs and a hunting rifle hidden in a carpet. They detained an adult male for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as the possession of drugs. Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Paarl and Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges. Ends
