EFF MP Naledi Chirwa Due In Court Over Alleged Assault Of Police Officer

EFF Member of Parliament Naledi Chirwa is expected to appear in the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court in Pretoria Tommorow, Monday, 12 October 2026, following an alleged altercation with a police officer at Brooklyn Police Station.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday night when Chirwa requested that officers commission an affidavit she had already signed. Police said she became upset after being informed that affidavits must be signed in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths.

A confrontation allegedly followed, during which Chirwa is accused of assaulting an officer. She was arrested and released on a warning later that night.

Chirwa has disputed the police’s version of events, claiming she was denied services and mistreated at the station. She said she sought medical treatment for injuries and subsequently opened a counter-case of assault against a senior police officer.

The EFF MP also alleged that the assault charge against her was an attempt to control the narrative surrounding the incident.

Both sides have made conflicting allegations, which have yet to be tested in court.
