The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are convening their much-anticipated National People’s Assembly (NPA) in Johannesburg from December 13-15, 2024. This assembly, held every five years, is pivotal for shaping the party’s future as it elects new leadership and formulates strategies ahead of critical electoral periods.
It serves as a platform for assessing the EFF’s trajectory and addressing internal challenges, making its outcomes significant for the broader political landscape of South Africa. However, the event has been overshadowed by the exclusion of senior member Dr. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, a move that has sparked widespread speculation about internal divisions within the party.
NDLOZI’S ABSENCE FUELS CONTROVERSY
Dr. Ndlozi, a founding member of the EFF and its former spokesperson, has reportedly been barred from attending the NPA. This assembly serves as a critical platform for electing the party’s leadership and setting its strategic direction. While no official explanation has been provided by the EFF, sources within the party suggest the decision stems from tensions between Ndlozi and the leadership, including Commander-in-Chief Julius Malema who rebuked these claims as sheeben gossip.
Political analyst Dr. Levy Ndou has criticised the lack of transparency, stating, “If you prevent a figure like Dr. Ndlozi from attending, you must have compelling reasons. Failure to justify such actions risks alienating party members and creating divisions.” Ndou added that Ndlozi’s exclusion could exacerbate dissatisfaction among the EFF’s younger members, where he enjoys significant support.
LEADERSHIP STRUGGLES AND INTERNAL TENSIONS
Reports indicate that Ndlozi’s absence may be linked to his potential candidacy for the deputy president position, a role previously held by Floyd Shivambu. Shivambu’s departure from the EFF has left a leadership vacuum, and Ndlozi’s name has been floated as a popular contender. However, such a challenge could pose a direct threat to Malema’s consolidated leadership and the influence of his inner circle.
The EFF’s handling of internal disputes has come under scrutiny, with some critics arguing that dissenting voices within the party are systematically sidelined. Ndlozi’s exclusion follows a broader pattern of discord, as seen in the recent departures of other senior members, including Dali Mpofu.
A HISTORY OF INFLUENCE
Dr. Ndlozi has been a pivotal figure in shaping the EFF’s public image, particularly during its formative years. Known for his eloquence and intellectual rigour, he played a crucial role in articulating the party’s policies and engaging with younger voters. Despite stepping back from the spokesperson role in recent years, Ndlozi has remained an influential voice within the organisation.
His exclusion from the NPA raises questions about the EFF’s ability to manage diversity of thought within its ranks. Analysts warn that such actions could erode the party’s credibility and unity ahead of South Africa’s upcoming general elections.
THE ROAD AHEAD
The EFF’s leadership faces a critical juncture. As the party prepares to elect its next national office bearers, the exclusion of high-profile members like Ndlozi could undermine its democratic principles and alienate its support base. Dr. Ndou cautions, “The EFF’s strength lies in its ability to mobilise diverse voices. Silencing internal critics may weaken its appeal to the electorate.”
What are your thoughts on Dr. Ndlozi’s exclusion from the EFF’s NPA? Do you think it signals deeper divisions within the party?
