Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – The SAPS Management in the Eastern Cape mourns the tragic death of a member and wishes those injured a speedy recovery following an accident on the N2 outside Tsolo yesterday 16 September 2024. According to information in our records indicates that five officers attached to the Mthatha K9 Unit, were traveling in two vehicles and following up information about suspects, who were allegedly involved in house robbery in Port Edward and in possession of firearms and were in transit on the N2 towards Qumbu. It is said that while the officers were on the N2 near Dukathole Brickyard outside Tsolo, their vehicles were involved in an accident with a minibus and another vehicle. The driver in one of the police vehicles, a Warrant Officer (49), succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the scene. The other four officers sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital. A case of culpable homicide was opened for further investigation. The two alleged armed suspects who were being pursued were eventually nabbed. The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene and her management are heartbroken and devastated by the catastrophic news. These members displayed dedication and loyalty to their vocation, which is to serve and protect the law-abiding citizens. We extend our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of a member, who sadly lost his life, and wish the injured colleagues a speedy recovery”, concluded Lt Gen Mene. Ends
