Media Statement GQEBERHA – The Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene, the Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner and Station Commanders in the Nelson Mandela Bay District (NMB) took to the streets this weekend in ensuring a safer Gqeberha, as well as Operation Shanela impacted in the hotspot areas of the metro. The weekly operations by police members inclusive of other external stakeholders kicked from Wednesday until the early hours today, 04 August 2024, with high visibility concentration in the problematic areas of Gelvandale , Kwadwesi and Motherwell. Liquor outlets, firearm compliance checks, stop and search were conducted as well as blue light patrols and vehicle checkpoint and search warrants were executed at houses in the Gelvandale area. The District success in eradicating illegal firearms continuous as the relentless efforts of members paid off on Saturday, 03 August 2024. Police arrested three suspects for possession of two unlicensed firearms and ammunition. On investigation they discovered that these firearms were reported stolen at KwaDwesi and Patensie in 2017 and 2024 and both were confiscated by police. Various other operations throughout the district included visiting liquor outlets for compliance inspections, visit to drug post and more that seventy (70) suspects were arrested for various crimes and among them were eight (8) suspects charged for illegal possession of drugs. Police took up space in Gqeberha and also arrested outstanding wanted suspects on serious crimes. During the operation they arrested sixty nine (69) suspects on crime ranging from attempted murder, hijacking, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, possession of drugs, robbery, housebreaking, possession of suspected stolen property, domestic violence, theft and stock theft Police also pounced on traffic offenders and managed to arrest eleven (11) motorists on charges of driving whilst under the influence of liquor around Gqeberha. All the confiscated firearms will be sent to ballistics for analysis and the suspects will be appearing in the respective magistrate courts. In addressing the officers and members on parade last night in Gqeberha, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene reiterated that play time is over for criminals as police will be hard at work and are dedicated to proactive measures in securing the safety of all our citizens.
“While success may not be measured in arrests, our focus is on prevention. To those contemplating criminal activities, be warned our vigilance is heightened and we are ready. Together with our force multipliers, operations will continue in the Nelson Mandela Bay District in the efforts to reduce stubborn crimes’, added Lt Gen Mene.
