Media Statement ZWELITSHA – The weekly multi-disciplinary high-density operations in the Eastern Cape have increased as more than 54 000 operations were conducted, resulting in positive results. A total of 814 suspects were nabbed last week for crimes ranging from murder to possession of illicit drugs. For the period between 15 and 21 July 2024, there was a noticeable increase in the number of operations that were conducted in the Eastern Cape, with a total of 54 972 high-density operations recorded for the province. These integrated crime fighting operations of police members with the assistance from other law enforcement agencies and other pertinent government departments are making huge strides towards addressing crime in the eight districts of the province. Fourteen suspects were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. During the firearms inspection operations, 42 suspects were charged for contravening the Firearms Control Act. A total of 186 suspects were arrested for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, of which some of them are Domestic Violence incidents with protection orders. Thirty-six people were nabbed for murder. Police with the assistance from the Department of Transport conducted a total of 430 vehicle checkpoints of which 40 were roadblocks, which resulted in the arrest of 55 motorists for runk driving. Police closed 12 liquor outlets for operating without licences, in contravention of the Eastern Cape Liquor Act, and also seized 925 litres of liquor. Police with the assistance from the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Environment managed to clamp down on abalone poaching and confiscated 896 units of abalone. Police also nabbed 194 suspects for drug-related crimes, of which 42 were nabbed for dealing in illicit drugs.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, reiterated that in as much as there are challenges of stubborn crime in some parts of the province, we will be consistent in our positive actions. Police will remain committed to dealing decisively with criminals.”
