Eastern Cape Family of Five Found Dead in Flagstaff as Police Investigate Suspected Murder-Suicide
Family of Five Found Dead in Eastern Cape Home as Police Probe Suspected Murder-Suicide
A quiet community in the Eastern Cape has been left reeling after five members of the same family were found dead inside their home in what police believe may have been a domestic tragedy.
Police in the OR Tambo District have opened a mass murder investigation following the discovery of the bodies at a homestead in Mfundisweni A/A, Magqagqeni Locality, near Flagstaff, on Friday morning.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers were called to the property at approximately 8:52am after a concerned community member visited the home and made the grim discovery.
When police arrived, they found the bodies of five family members, including an adult man, his wife and their three children. All five had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Investigators also recovered a pistol next to the body of the adult male, a detail that has led police to consider the possibility of a domestic homicide followed by suicide. However, authorities have stressed that the circumstances surrounding the deaths have not yet been confirmed and that all possibilities remain part of the ongoing investigation.
Preliminary information indicates that a friend of the family and another relative arrived at the home during the early hours of Friday morning before discovering the devastating scene.
Forensic specialists have since taken over the investigation and are carefully examining the property for evidence that could help establish exactly what happened inside the family home.
Police said post mortem examinations will be conducted to formally determine the causes of death.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents struggling to come to terms with the loss of an entire family.
SAPS has extended its condolences to the relatives and loved ones of the deceased and has appealed to anyone with information that could assist investigators to come forward.
The investigation remains active.
