The East London High Court has granted an urgent interdict stopping the ANC Eastern Cape provincial elective conference, which was set to take place this weekend.
The ruling, delivered today, Thursday, found that the party had failed to follow its own constitution and conference procedures.
The application was brought by party members Lwazi Rotya, Sinethemba Mpande and Nompumelelo Mzothwa, who raised concerns about irregular Branch General Meetings and delegate verification.
Represented by advocate Dali Mpofu, the applicants argued the process was flawed and unfair.
The court agreed, ordering the ANC to address the issues before proceeding and to cover legal costs.
The conference in East London was expected to elect new provincial leadership, with divisions linked to Oscar Mabuyane’s faction adding to tensions.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula had earlier insisted that the gathering would go ahead.
The ANC says it respects the judgment and will work to resolve the procedural concerns before setting a new date.
