The East London Magistrate’s Court is set to hand down its judgment today in the firearm case involving EFF leader Julius Malema and his former bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman.
The pair face multiple charges, including:
Unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition
Discharging a firearm in a built-up area
Reckless endangerment
The charges stem from the EFF’s fifth-anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on 28 July 2018, where Malema was seen discharging what the state insists was a real firearm.
Both Malema and Snyman have pleaded not guilty, claiming the weapon was a toy gun incapable of firing live rounds.
The state, however, has relied on the testimony of 19 witnesses, including ballistics experts, to argue otherwise.
The case, which began in 2019, has suffered several delays, including the illness of the presiding magistrate late last year.
