Media Statement KWAZULU-NATAL – On Friday, 31 January 2025, the Hawks members from Durban Serious Commercial Crime Investigation served a 44 years old suspect with a summons to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s court on 19 February 2025, for alleged fraud. The investigation revealed that the suspect had allegedly impersonated his brother over the cellphone and obtained a funeral policy cover worth R100 000.00 from 1LifeDirect insurance. Two months after securing the policy, the suspect’s brother was tragically shot dead at his home in Mtubatuba. It is alleged that the suspect then called 1Life insurance again, using the same cellphone number, to make a fraudulent claim for R100 000.00. The insurance company became suspicious of the claim and reported the matter to the police, leading to the opening of a case of fraud at Durban North police station. The matter was then transferred to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Commercial Crime Investigation for further investigation. The potential loss to the insurance company was estimated at R200 000.00. The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona applauded the members for the good work. Ends
