KWAZULU-NATAL – On Monday, 03 March 2025, the Pietermaritzburg Regional court handed down a sentence of 12 months imprisonment, half of which was suspended for five years’ with an option to pay a fine of R6 000-00 to Vusimuzi Mtshali (58), for his conviction on a fraud charge. The conviction stemmed from an incident in February 2017, when a State vehicle was booked for repairs at a garage. The station commander discovered that the vehicle’s fuel card had been used to purchase fuel at the Umfolozi garage while the vehicle was still undergoing repairs. A thorough investigation confirmed that the vehicle was indeed at the garage when the fuel was purchased. The total amount of fuel purchased using the fuel card amounted to R7 379-00 over a period of time. The station commander opened a case of fraud at the Nondweni police station, which was then referred to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Investigation for further probe. After a comprehensive investigation, Vusimuzi Mtshali, the vehicle fleet manager as well as a senior administration clerk at Nondweni Police station, were arrested and charged with fraud. Mtshali appeared in court several times until 3 March 2025, where he was found guilty and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, with half of his sentence suspended for five years’. The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona commended the effective cooperation between the Nondweni Police Station and the Hawks in uncovering and prosecuting this case of fraud.
