Tensions flared at Dora Nginza Hospital in Gqeberha this week as frustrated staff staged a wildcat strike, demanding payment for five months of overdue overtime.
Workers gathered outside the hospital on Monday, blocking access to patients and colleagues. Their frustration stems from unpaid hours dating back to April, with only clinical staff having received compensation — leaving non-clinical staff feeling overlooked and sidelined.
“We only want what’s rightfully owed to us,” said one union representative. “This issue of paying some staff while ignoring others has created division. People are anxious because they’re kept in the dark about when payments will be made.”
The Eastern Cape health department confirmed that the overtime payments are being processed but condemned the disruption caused by the protest. “Employees cannot deny patients and staff access to the hospital,” a spokesperson said. “A wildcat strike is not the way to go. Negotiations are under way to resolve the matter.”
Union leaders, however, argue that the real issue is a lack of communication. Staff reportedly discovered over the weekend that the promised August 15 payments were missing from their payslips, sparking panic and anger.
For now, workers say they’ll continue pressing for clarity — and for the wages they’ve already earned.
