Former Ukhozi FM breakfast show host Sipho “DJ Sgqemeza” Mbatha has broken his silence following the non-renewal of his contract.
Mbatha hosted his final breakfast show on Tuesday morning and is set to be replaced by former Jozi FM radio presenter Velani “Vee” Mthembu.
In a strongly worded statement, Mbatha claimed that there were internal efforts to push him out of the station.
“There is someone in management that wanted me out by any way possible,” he said.
While he acknowledged the station’s right to make staffing decisions, he expressed concern over the manner in which the matter was handled.
“Ukhozi FM did not renew my contract… this is within their right,” he said.
“However, the process and communication… raised serious concerns.”
Mbatha also questioned the criteria used in the decision-making process.
“The metrics used are deeply concerning,” he said.
He further revealed that he had been offered another slot at the station, but turned it down because he believed it was not suitable for a broadcaster of his experience.
“After careful consideration, I declined due to its structure, scope, and lack of sustainability,” he said.
Mbatha also dismissed speculation that he was leaving radio to focus on ministry work.
“I must correct a misleading narrative… this is not true,” he said.
Although he remained respectful towards the station, he pointed to problems within management.
“My concern lies with how certain individuals within management have handled this matter,” he said.
He concluded by thanking his colleagues and listeners for the support they had shown him over the years.
