Food Lover’s Market and “Master Braaier” Jan Braai – real name Jan Scannell – have “debunked” a viral video showing the latter seemingly ignoring a non-white person while handing out free boerewors rolls.
The video – which has courted controversy on social media – sees the businessman and TV personality being filmed outside the Willowbridge Shopping Centre in Tyger Valley on Saturday, 21 September.
Jan is known for his range of braai products and meat, which are available at various retailers.
VIRAL VIDEO: JAN BRAAI COURTS CONTROVERSY OVER ‘RACISM’ ALLEGATIONS
In a clip widely shared on social media, Jan Braai offered free “kerriewors rolls” to Food Lover’s Market shoppers in Cape Town.
The video shows the braai enthusiast handing out food to several white men and women and even giving gifts to children. In the background, a coloured male seemingly waits for his turn.
The video cut off before the male was given his boerewors roll.
In the comments section, many South Africans have accused Jan Braai of being “racist.”
According to IOL, National Coloured Congress (NCC) PR councillor Anastatia Stacy Davids said of the video, “Whether people want to shy away from this incident, a lot can be read into Jan Braai’s behaviour.
“Some of them try to do it subtly and with unintentional actions. But I’m glad I could screen-record it before he deleted it, because already a lot were commenting in disgust. If he wasn’t guilty of anything, why delete the video?
“We do not condone this behaviour, and we will remain the voice for the voiceless. We will not allow micro-aggressions towards people of colour in this country”.
FOOD LOVERS MARKET SHOW NEW ANGLE ‘DEBUNKING’ CLAIMS
On Facebook, Food Lover’s Market at Willowbridge Shopping Centre deleted the original video starring Jan Braai.
They replaced it with another showing him handing out rolls to people of colour.
The page also claimed that the racist allegations were “simply not true.”

It said in a statement: “This allegation is based on an uncharitable interpretation of a single video, which was a small snapshot of the day.
“Anyone who was there would find the allegation laughable”.
In a post on Monday, 23 September, Food Lover’s Market posted a clip from CCTV footage, which they claimed “debunked” the allegations. In the clip, Jan Braai is seen handing out his “Kerriewors roll” to the coloured male, who wears a blue tracksuit.
It posted: “We know you were concerned that the gentleman in the tracksuit didn’t receive a boerewors roll from Jan Braai. We wanted to offer you a different angle of the moment. So we tracked down the full CCTV footage and can confirm he received his boerewors roll.
“As mentioned in our first statement, the original video was shared in the spirit of the day we had with our Willowbridge Food Lover’s family – that anyone who visited the stand would receive a boerewors roll for free.
It added: “We hope this CCTV footage comforts you that we did not exclude or single out anybody in what was a celebration of everyone’s heritage.”
The video was reposted on Jan Braai’s Facebook and TikTok accounts.
