Authorities have launched an investigation after one of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s official vehicles was shot at earlier this month. The incident occurred while he was returning home from an African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee meeting in Boksburg, near the N12.
Although details remain limited, Mashatile’s spokesperson confirmed the Deputy President was unharmed. The motive behind the attack is still unknown.
When approached for comment, police declined to share specifics, stating that they do not discuss the security arrangements of top government officials.

This incident has intensified concerns about the safety of high-ranking leaders in the country. It follows a previous controversy in July 2023, when members of Mashatile’s security team were filmed assaulting civilians on Johannesburg’s N1 freeway, sparking national outrage and disciplinary action.Currently, the Deputy President is in KwaZulu-Natal as part of the ANC’s Easter church visit programme.
