Johannesburg, South Africa – [Insert Date]
Miss, Mr & Mrs Deaf South Africa (MDSA) is calling on the public, media, and businesses to rally behind an extraordinary cause that empowers the Deaf community and showcases their talent, resilience, and leadership on both national and international stages.
MDSA, a non-profit NPC, runs a pageant that is unlike any other – it is not about external beauty, but about building self-confidence, skills, and visibility for Deaf individuals in South Africa. Many past participants have found new strength, friendships, and even healing through their MDSA journey.
“We once had a young woman with autism and deafness take part,” says Janice Jonker, CEO of MDSA. “Her parents were in tears, seeing her walk the stage with confidence. That’s what MDSA is about — restoring dignity and empowering those who often feel unseen.”
This year, the MDSA winners have been selected to represent South Africa at an international competition in October 2025 — a life-changing opportunity. But the organization is struggling to cover the required costs and is urgently seeking support.
Fundraiser on June 21st To help raise funds for the international competition and continued development of the finalists, MDSA will be hosting a fundraiser event on June 21st, and is appealing to the public and businesses to attend, donate, or sponsor items for the event. “We’d love to spoil our winners with special treats,” says Janice, “but all our funds are being saved for their international journey — and even that is not enough. We have a long road ahead to reach our target.”
More Than a Pageant
MDSA is not only supporting this year’s winners but is also preparing to announce a new group of finalists in July, leading up to the Gala Pageant Finale in February 2026. These finalists will be given a preparation workshop weekend, including a sash ceremony, to build skills and confidence.
MDSA also offers free basic sign language workshops to companies, schools, and community groups interested in hosting them — part of their mission to create Deaf awareness across South Africa.
A Volunteer-Run Mission
Run entirely by volunteers who work full-time jobs and give their free time to keep the organization going, MDSA relies solely on sponsorship and donations. “We don’t earn salaries. We do this because we believe in the Deaf community and what they can achieve,” says Janice.
Call to Action
The organization is calling on:
Media houses to help spread awareness.
Companies to sponsor or partner with MDSA.
Communities and individuals to attend the fundraiser or offer in-kind support (like prizes, décor, food, or venue use).
Let’s help these inspiring individuals shine on the global stage and continue the work of building confidence and visibility for Deaf South Africans.
