Deadly Crashes and Truck Incident Bring Limpopo Roads to a Standstill
Polokwane: Limpopo roads have been plunged into chaos following a series of serious incidents that left at least four people dead, more than a dozen injured and major routes disrupted across the province.
The incidents, which included two fatal crashes and a separate truck obstruction, prompted the deployment of police, traffic officials and emergency response teams to multiple scenes.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed that authorities were working across the affected areas to assist victims, manage traffic and protect other road users.
Driver Dies After Head On Collision on N1
One of the most serious crashes occurred on the N1 near Astron Garage, where a SAPS Toyota minibus collided head on with an LDV Toyota Starlet.
Preliminary information from the department indicates that the driver of the Toyota Starlet died in the collision.
The impact sparked a fire that engulfed the Starlet, leaving it burnt beyond recognition.
The SAPS minibus also caught fire at the front following the collision.
Twelve people travelling in the police vehicle were injured.
Eight of the occupants sustained serious injuries, while four suffered minor injuries. All the injured were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
The department conveyed its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
Limpopo SAPS Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers also extended his well wishes to the injured police officers.
Three Die in Separate N1 Crashes Near Modimolle
Further north, another series of crashes caused major disruption on the N1 near Modimolle Mountain in the Waterberg District.
Several vehicles were involved, including a Toyota sedan, a GWM LDV and a Mercedes-Benz.
Three men died in the crashes.
Five other people were injured. Four sustained slight injuries, while another person suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.
The scale of the incidents forced authorities to close the northbound carriageway of the N1 at Kranskop.
Motorists travelling north were diverted onto the R33 through Modimolle. They were then directed onto the R101 before rejoining the N1 at Middlefontein.
The southbound carriageway was also partially closed, including the fast lane, leading to slow-moving traffic.
Traffic officers, police and emergency personnel were deployed to the area to manage the scene and assist motorists caught in the disruption.
Truck Blocks Two Lanes Near Haenertsburg
A separate incident near Haenertsburg added to the disruption on Limpopo roads when a large truck became stationary about three kilometres outside the town.
The truck blocked two lanes, creating a major obstruction and affecting the movement of traffic.
The department also reported that a motorbike rider lost control and ended up underneath the truck.
Traffic officers were dispatched to the scene to control traffic and protect motorists and other road users.
The incident further highlighted the dangers faced by motorists travelling through busy routes where crashes, disabled vehicles and emergency operations can quickly create hazardous conditions.
Authorities Urge Motorists to Exercise Caution
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety urged motorists to approach accident scenes with extreme caution and to follow instructions issued by traffic officers and emergency personnel.
Drivers were also urged to remain alert around affected areas, particularly where lanes had been closed or traffic diverted.
With several major incidents occurring across the province, authorities faced the difficult task of managing emergency scenes while keeping traffic moving and preventing further collisions.
The exact circumstances surrounding the fatal crashes remain subject to investigation.
For families of those who died, however, the investigations will come after the immediate tragedy of lives lost on Limpopo’s roads.
