Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The De Aar Regional Court recently sentenced a fraudster after he scammed a 40-year-old man of his pension during April 2024 The accused approached the complainant and advised him to invest his money with him in order to double the amount. The complainant subsequently handed over R365 000-00 to the accused in De Aar. After several unsuccessful attempts to locate the accused, the complainant opened a case of fraud with the De Aar police. The case docket was assigned to Detective Sergeant Rienest Brand for further investigation. The accused was traced and arrested in Noupoort and appeared in court several times. On Friday, 30 August 2024, 34-year-old Michael Ssebegala entered into a plea bargain agreement with the State and was convicted and sentenced in the De Aar Regional Court for fraud. Ssebegala was sentenced to eight (8) years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five (5) years. The accused was ordered to pay R10 000-00 immediately to the complainant and R5 000-00 each month and to hand over a vehicle that he purchased with the complainant’s money. The Pixley Ka Seme District Police Management applauded the investigation officer for the arrest and for bringing the perpetrator before court and securing the conviction and sentencing. Ends
