As the sun sets in one part of South Africa, it rises resplendently in another. The big news echoes throughout Africa and the world that the Crown Gospel Music Awards, a pinnacle of musical distinction in the heart of South Africa, will be moving its home turf. After a glorious 15-year run in Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, the Awards are poised to take the stage in the bustling city of Johannesburg, Gauteng. This exciting transition signals a stirring new phase filled with boundless potentials not only for the illustrious Awards but also for the culturally rich province.
Gracing the music scene since 2008, the Crown Gospel Music Awards has been a beacon of appreciation and recognition for the cream of the crop in South Africa’s Gospel music. Over the years, the Awards have garnered emblematic status, becoming a long-awaited yearly celebration within the local music milieu. Offering a high-profile platform, the Awards have hosted the crème de la crème of South African Gospel music, including industry giants such as Rebecca Malope, Hlengiwe Mhlaba, Solly Mahlangu, Jumbo, along with a myriad of other Gospel artists.
As the Awards usher in a new era, Gauteng’s MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Morakqne Mosupyoe, couldn’t be more thrilled. “As the epicentre of South Africa’s Creative Industries, Gauteng is a natural fit for the Crown Gospel Music Awards,” said Mosupyoe. “The Awards have opened doors for countless talents searching for opportunities”. He added that the aspiration is to propagate both the Awards and its genre across the nation to the entirety of Africa and beyond.
Further amplifying the powerhouse that is South African gospel music, the Awards have also played an instrumental part in promoting the vibrant Gospel culture both locally and internationally. Through various build-up initiatives, they have provided an arena for growth and empowerment for local Gospel artists.
After more than a decade of making indelible marks in Durban, the Awards will now grace the vibrant cityscape of Johannesburg from 2023 onwards. This shift beholds enormous promise for the Awards while also benefiting Johannesburg.
All in all, the relocation of the Crown Gospel Music Awards to Johannesburg stands as a thrilling milestone. Amid promises of heightened economic and tourism benefits, the move carves out new opportunities for the Awards, the city and the country as well. The Awards’ role in exalting the Gospel culture of South Africa will further steer the country into the global limelight. As for the joyous occasion, the forthcoming year’s Crown Gospel Music Awards have a rich repertoire of events lined up leading to the main ceremony, including the Iziko National Music Conference, Ayihlome Prayer, Prayer Walk, community empowerment programs, and, of course, the main awards. #SaltAwardWinner #ANewSeason #CGMA16 #Crowns16
