Media Statement CAPE TOWN – Western Cape police arrested several suspects for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition during crime prevention operations. On Friday, 20 December 2024, at about 22:10, Members of Operation Shanela and Public Order Police performed crime prevention patrols in Gugulethu as part of the Safer Festive Season operations. While they were busy patrolling in Kana Informal Settlement, they noticed a suspicious Black Polo Vivo vehicle. They stopped and searched the vehicle and occupants and found two firearms, a silver Norinco 9mm pistol with serial number removed with nine rounds and a Z88 pistol with serial number removed and 12 rounds of ammunition. Next to the firearms, an undisclosed amount of cash was found. The three suspects, aged between 26 and 40, were arrested for possession of prohibited firearms and illegal possession of ammunition. They are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrates court once they are charged. In an unrelated matter on 20 December 2024 at 23:30, Grassy Park SAPS members were doing tracing operations when information surfaced that a wanted suspect in an attempted murder case was at a premises in Viljoen Walk, Parkwood. They immediately went to the mentioned address and found the suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm, a .38 Rossi revolver with four rounds of ammunition, suspected to be used in the attempted murder. The 44-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and will appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s on Monday, 23 December 2024, on the mentioned charges On 20 December 2024 at 23:30, Hermanus SAPS members on patrol received information from Overberg District Operational Command Centre about a White Ford Ranger LDV driving with false/cloned number plates, which belong to a Chevrolet Sonic. The vehicle also triggered a License Plate Recognition camera in Hermanus. The vehicle was allegedly occupied by four armed male. The vehicle was later found by Hermanus SAPS members at a petrol station in Sandbaai, with two occupants in it. The members stopped the vehicle and searched it with the occupants, during which two unknown pistols with no serial numbers and 23 rounds of ammunition were found inside the vehicle. The pistols, ammunition, cellular telephones, and number plates were confiscated and booked in as exhibits. The adult males were arrested and detained at Hermanus SAPS for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Once charged, the suspects are expected to appear in the Hermanus Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charges All these firearms will be sent to ballistics for analysis. Ends
