Media Statement CAPE TOWN – Crime Prevention activities in various SAPS precincts to ensure that offenders are brought to book, resulted in the arrest of three male suspects on charges of possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition. Police members attached to Operation Shanela, deployed in Gugulethu to combat crime, responded to a complaint of a shooting incident in progress on Tuesday 26 March 2024. Information at their disposal indicated that the suspects fled in a Ford Bantam light delivery vehicle. When they approached NY 112, they saw the vehicle and ordered the driver of the Ford Bantam to stop. The driver ignored the instruction which resulted in a high speed chase and ultimately ended near to Xhalanga Street where the suspects stopped the vehicle and fled on foot in different directions, with police members in pursuit. They accosted one of the males and found him in possession of an AK 47 assault rifle. Further inspection of the vehicle led to the recovery of another AK 47 assault rifle. Police arrested the 35-year-old male suspect on a charge of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Kuilsriver Crime Prevention Unit members were busy with patrols on Tuesday 26 March 2024, when community members alerted them of a serious incident in progress in Reuter Street in Kalkfontein. The members approached the address and found two unknown men, of whom one sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, a male, aged 36, informed the police members that the unidentified man, who was with him, was indeed the suspect and pointed to the location where the suspect disposed of the firearm. The police members arrested the 25-year-old man and recovered a firearm with ammunition. Kuilsriver police are investigating charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition and attempted murder. Harare police members conducted stop and search operations on Wednesday 27 March 2024, in Ganga Street in Town Two, Khayelitsha. They noticed an unidentified man who became restless and attempted to flee. The man was brought under control and searched, which resulted in the arrest of the adult man when he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition. The suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone, Blue Downs and Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Courts on the mentioned charges. Ends
