A province-wide crackdown on drunk driving in KwaZulu-Natal saw 54 motorists arrested on Friday night — among them a 44-year-old public prosecutor.
The prosecutor was stopped on R620 Marine Drive in Margate, Port Shepstone, around 11pm. Authorities said her breath alcohol reading was 0.83mg/L — four times over the legal limit.
The operation formed part of the ongoing “Zero Tolerance, No Nonsense and Alufakwa” campaign, aimed at curbing road deaths linked to alcohol abuse.
MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said the high-profile arrest should serve as a wake-up call. “Alcohol is ravaging families, creating orphans and widows, and leaving a trail of destruction,” he said.
According to Duma, more than 130 drunk drivers have been arrested in the province over the past two weeks. Friday’s breakdown included:
Durban – 21 arrests
Pietermaritzburg – 18 arrests
Ladysmith – 14 arrests
Empangeni – 1 arrest
He stressed that the fight against drunk driving cannot be won by government alone: “We must work together to save the nation from a pervasive binge-drinking culture.”
